Around the World - The 38th Stop, Frankfurt am Main, Hessen, Germany, Europe
Back in Europe, and the first 5 nights in Frankfurt am Main or more commonly known - Frankfurt.
Frankfurt is the largest city in the German state of Hessen and the fifth largest city in Germany. It’s the largest financial centre in continental Europe and due to it’s central location, also a major air, rail and highway transport hub. But besides the banks and traffic, Frankfurt is known for its skyline; the significant number of skyscrapers and high-rise buildings in the city centre.
Our main reason to start our Europe-tour from Germany was our need for a new car, as we had sold our own one before leaving Finland in September 2013. And due to the taxation, for Finns Germany is a pretty good choice for buying a car (and especially if you are after a German one).
Though we used most of our days in Frankfurt to find this new car and then make a good deal of it (some ‘interesting’ sessions with a register plate-maker…), we also had fun time in the city. We stayed in a nice hotel just a few blocks from Main River and the old town. There was a lot to discover at close hand and must admit - Frankfurt was really something we didn’t have beforehand expected. It wasn't just the busy business center with bold high-rise buildings, but an attractive city with a good mixture of stylish modern buildings and beautiful well-restored old architecture. And whether it was the dinner we enjoyed on the banks of Main River or drinks we had in a cosy cider pub, the atmosphere was open, relaxed and hospitable - so nothing to do with 'busy & stiff business people' .
We had lovely sunny spring days. The weather in Frankfurt had been exceptionally warm, yet we were freezing. For this we off course could thank only our earlier destinations Malaysia & Australia.
Next stop Stuttgart, Baden-Württemberg, Germany.
